Product Images for Online Store – How to Succeed on Your Own

Product images play a central role in e-commerce, where they can either promote sales or prevent them from happening. Since e-commerce customers cannot physically see, touch, or try the product, you need professional and high-quality product images to generate interest and trust in both the product and your online store.

Taking product photos is often best left to a professional, but you can also succeed on your own.

The product image is the first thing that catches the customer's attention.

If the product images are not of high quality and do not show the product in the right light, a potential customer will decide to abandon the online store, and you will lose the customer.

Since in an online store a product can only be visually assessed based on the product images and possibly videos you provide, it is extremely important that these immediately convince the customer that you have something interesting and worth the customer's time and money to offer.

Professional photographers have the necessary skills and equipment to take high-quality and marketable product photos for online stores. When you leave the photography to them, the features and details of the product will be clearly conveyed to the customer, and your product will certainly be presented in a visually appealing way.

From the product photos taken by the photographer, you will also get a cohesive, brand-consistent whole that makes your online store look professional.

This can be difficult to achieve when you take product photos yourself, as taking compelling product photos involves much more than just pressing a button.

If, however, you have decided to take the product photos yourself, ensure a successful outcome with these guidelines:

Focus on image quality

Ensure precise and sharp images as well as clearly distinguishable details by using a high-quality DSLR camera or a sufficiently good smartphone camera for taking product photos.

Nowadays, it is possible to take sufficiently good product photos with phones other than Apple's.

Select a suitable background for the product image

Choose a simple and neutral background for the product image, against which the product stands out clearly.

A white and transparent background is a safe choice for e-commerce product images. If you choose something else as the background, ensure that there is no unnecessary clutter visible or that there is not too much distracting props that draw attention away from the product itself.

Consider the composition and location of the image

Try different compositions, angles, and locations in the product image. Showcase the product from various perspectives, display materials and texture up close, and photograph each version of the product, such as color, separately.

If you do not use a backdrop, choose a location for the shoot that conveys the right mood and purpose. Also, showcase your product in different contexts so that customers can easily grasp the product's features, uses, and, for example, size.

Pay special attention to lighting

A successful product image absolutely requires successful lighting in the background.

If the lighting is not right, the product image will not look good, even if you do everything else correctly. It is also difficult or impossible to edit photos taken in poor lighting to make them look high-quality.

Your best option is to utilize natural light as well as photography lighting, which allows you to control the amount of light and direct it onto the product.

When photographing outdoors, avoid direct and overly bright sunlight to prevent product images from being overexposed, and also avoid dim lighting, which causes noise and blurriness, resulting in low-quality images.

Use creativity in the product image

Utilize different backgrounds, platforms, locations, angles, props, layouts, and contexts! Take pictures of the product on various surfaces, with props of different sizes, and on or in use by a model. Experiment and see what looks good, fits your brand, and you think appeals to your customers.

If necessary, edit the product images you have taken with any image editing software.

Also remember to optimize product images so that your online store does not slow down.

Product images and videos must be optimized manually or with the help of a plugin, so that they do not burden the online store and significantly slow down performance.

If the page content takes more than two seconds to load, you are very likely to lose your customer from your online store very quickly. If the loading speed is not sufficient, it also has a negative impact on organic or natural Google visibility.

It is advisable to save images as PNG or JPG files, with the latter being the smallest and least impactful on loading speed. If you prefer to shoot product images in RAW format, convert them to a more web-friendly format after editing.

After this, compress the product images by cropping the image size smaller or reducing the file size of multiple images at once, for example, with TinyPNG

All videos should again be embedded with a link to the online store, as these are usually large files that slow down loading speed.
